In Waterville and Augusta, food bank donations can turn an ordinary grocery trip into a practical act of neighborly care.

As colder weather approaches, local organizations also welcome volunteer help, clothing donations and winter supplies for children.

Augusta Food Bank requests mac-and-cheese cups, juice boxes for KidsPaks, protein bars, canned pasta with protein, corn and soup.

Food can be brought to 161 Mount Vernon Avenue, Monday through Thursday, from 9 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon.

Financial gifts and volunteer support are welcome; call 207-622-5225 to check current needs before making a trip.

Waterville Food Bank accepts nonperishable groceries, fresh produce, eggs and grocery bags, as well as financial contributions.

Its drop-off location is 61 Pleasant Street, Monday through Thursday, from 9 in the morning until 2:30 in the afternoon.

For food bank volunteering, ask about stocking shelves, distributing groceries or transporting supplies rather than arriving without a scheduled shift.

Holiday closures can affect drop-offs, so call 207-616-0363 before heading over.

The need does not stop at the pantry door for neighbors preparing for colder days.

Addie’s Attic, at 209 Eastern Avenue in Augusta, accepts freshly washed, gently used clothing and linens without stains or damage.

Call 207-458-7088 to arrange clothing donations and check seasonal needs; do not leave items outside after hours.

In Waterville, Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter & Services welcomes oatmeal, pasta, sauce, canned chicken, soup, vegetables and grocery gift cards.

Bring contributions to the front desk at 19 Colby Street, or call 207-872-8082 with questions.

Maine Children’s Home accepts new items in their original packaging for its Winter Essentials program at 93 Silver Street in Waterville.

Weekday drop-offs run from 9 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon at Building 2, known as the Evergreen building.

Groups can ask about hosting a Giving Tree during the October through December collection season.

Matching a gift to a real need makes it more useful, whether it is food, a volunteer shift or a warm piece of clothing.
